I Heart Blogs

I am taking a break from the depths of my photo editing dungeon to talk about something that I recently discovered and has made my blog reading much more efficient – Google Reader! Why has no one told me about this? I spend a lot of time reading other photographers’ blogs because I think they are either geniuses behind the camera and/or phenomenal business people (both of equal importance IMHO)…and it really helps inspire and push me to grow my skills and my business. Anyway, Google Reader has made it possible for me to stalk probably 4 times as many photographers in half the time! I just pull up the site a couple of times a day and voila! All the newest blog entries are right there waiting for me!

Here are some of my favorites. These chicks and dudes are super-duper talented with unique styles, and have thriving photography businesses – and some are even fantastic writers to boot making reading their blogs all the more enjoyable.

Hillary Maybery – Weddings and portraits in Idaho, her style is so bright and cheery and looking at her pictures just makes me so happy!
Sarah Rhoads – Sarah and her hubby Chris are super artistic, rockin’ photographers out of Seattle, their style is so unique and I love it.
Jasmine Star - Jasmine blogs about everything, not just photography, I’m slightly embarrassed to say I know her husband’s name (JD), her dog’s name (Polo), and that she wear cowboy boots on her shoots – but thousands of other people also know these things so I don’t feel that bad.
Melissa Jill – Her amazing photos aside, she just seems like a cool, down-to-earth gal who loves her job…I can relate. :)
Del Sol Photography – I want to shoot destination weddings in Mexico too! Pleeeaaase!!
Wayne Yuan – New York wedding photographer, simply love his stuff, and all of his brides are flawless, how is that possible??
Strobist – Lighting tips and stuff, perfectly nerdy and wonderful.

Have some great stuff to share so stay tuned…and I really don’t work in a dungeon, I’m actually on the 3rd floor, just felt like being dramatic. :)

Can’t end without a picture of course! In honor of my beloved Phillies and their trip to the World Series for the second year in a row, here’s a snapshot of me and my friends at game 5 last year!  Beat the Yankees!!

Emma & Connor

One of the many things I love about fall: it’s warm enough that I don’t feel like my fingers are going to fall off, but it’s cool enough that I can chase around little kiddies and not break a sweat! I try to enjoy this time of year as much as possible because it always seems to be gone in a flash (um, yeah, this weekend the temps are not even going to reach 50! SERIOUSLY?). Also, no pun intended. Get it? Gone in a “flash”? I crack myself up with my incredibly lame photography humor.

I recently got to do a really fun shoot with Connor (age 2 1/2) and Emma (6 months) on a beautiful fall afternoon.  Connor was kind enough to keep me entertained while Emma endured several wardrobe changes…both of them smiling and happy the WHOLE time.

I love it when babies have big bright eyes – if you look closely you can actually see my reflection in Emma’s eyes in some of the shots!

I am so excited to announce the winners of my engagement contest – Dana Flocco and Anthony Morrison! Dana and Anthony’s story was submitted by Dana’s best friend Nadia. And while the story itself is fantastic, what I found to be just as heartwarming is how happy Nadia is for her friend, it’s a love story all around! As winners they will receive an on-location engagement photo session as well as a $50 gift certificate to the yummy Nicholas restaurant in South Philly. We hope to schedule their photo session for sometime this fall so stay tuned for the pictures!

Here’s the story Nadia submitted and a picture of Dana and Anthony…I can’t wait to photograph these two!!

“I am submitting this story on behalf of two of my favorite people, Dana Flocco and Anthony Morrison. Their picture is attached. They were recently engaged in Aruba on August 10, 2009. As soon as I saw a promo for the contest I knew that I had to enter their story. I often think about how their relationship has evolved over a short (or long) period of time—depending on how you look at it. Each time I do, I smile and am reminded about how love really does find its way.

Dana and I were friends for a long time before she met Anthony…the first time. She and Anthony dated during our senior year of high school in 1996. She actually took Anthony to our senior prom. As the story usually goes with young love and lust at that age, they went their separate ways before college started that fall. Fast forward to January 2009 when she and Anthony reconnected…via Facebook. Over the past 13 years, both Dana and Anthony have had their separate romances—long ones, short ones, memorable ones, and ones they’d like to forget. Dana had even moved to California for a few years for a change of scenery. As fate and the workings of the magical World Wide Web would have it, Dana and Anthony befriended one another on Facebook and a spark (which no one even knew existed) was rekindled. They found a connection so strong that everyone around them could feel. They texted, they IMed, they facebooked, and even actually spoke on the phone over a few short months. Anthony would make impromptu trips to LA to surprise Dana or fly her back to Philly. Dana had been considering a move back home and once her relationship with Anthony had bloomed it made all the more sense. By the end of March 2009, Dana was back home. Even though some people wondered if the flame would fade once Dana and Anthony lived in the same place and the allure of a long distance romance was gone, their relationship continued to grow.

I like to consider Dana as my other half. (I suppose if I get married someday I’d have to make her one-third, but I digress.) I know when she’s happy, sad, annoyed, confused, scared, ecstatic, and all the other emotions in-between. As far as her relationship with Anthony goes, I just knew. I could tell in her voice, her mannerisms, her look, her smile that this was a happy and fulfilled Dana—something that I and her family and friends have always wished for her, but hadn’t seen in a long time.

You might consider it a quick engagement. Or you might consider it an engagement that was 13 years in the making and just needed some time to let love to finds its way.

I couldn’t be happier for Dana and Anthony. I couldn’t be more hopeful about love.”

To top it all off, not long after submitting the story Nadia got engaged in Paris!! So congrats to all of you! :)

As you know, most of my portrait sessions are of families and kids, this one is no different except that the kids are grown-ups! Yep, I am shaking things up a bit!  I met up with the lovely Rocchi family at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and had a great photo session – certainly doesn’t hurt that they are all so great-looking.

Stay tuned this week for the winners of the engagement session contest!
